North Wales Coastal Home - Lounge Final Reveal

I’m so excited! It’s been two and a half years since I started on the design of the North Wales coastal home and I finally have a final reveal to show you! This house used to belong to my lovely nanan and grandad. A few months ago, I told you all about the interior design plans for the downstairs - in case you missed it, you can read about it here.

Let’s remind ourselves of how it used to look.

Before

Remember all the dark oak and stone? It felt so oppressive.

Dark, dark, dark.

Dark, dark, dark.

After

And here it is now!!

I can’t tell you how light the space feels. It’s got both east and west facing windows so it gets lovely light in the morning and afternoon. It makes me feel happy every time I walk in.

The walls are painted in Pink Ground - it’s a lovely warm, pale pink because it’s got lots of yellow pigment - and the woodwork and floor are in Pointing by Farrow and Ball. Painting the floor has made a massive difference because lots of light gets bounced around the room.

We had the floors restored and then we painted the woodwork and floor in Pointing by Farrow and Ball. We kept the old electric fire. The lovely painting is by my very talented mum (I’m trying to get her to start selling them!).

I used lots of texture - tufted materials, bamboo, rattan and linen - to add interest and warmth. The beaded chandeliers were a £20 bargain in the Homebase sale and fit perfectly with the coastal setting. And the mid-century coffee table was £25 - yes, TWENTY FIVE POUNDS! - from local Piece Hall vintage shop, Al’s Emporium.

The rug is the Afaw from La Redoute and it’s super cosy.

In the gallery wall, we included a black and white photograph of my nanan which was taken at Rhos-on-Sea outdoor pool in the ‘40s - it’s my favourite photo of all time. The whiskey glass print is in honour of my grandad who could often be found with a glass. I always like a gallery wall to tell a story! I found the ‘70s string art at Moonbow Vintage - it’s perfect for this space and the gold really helps to lift the scheme. The ‘70s bamboo stool was an eBay buy.

And we kept one old piece of the existing dark oak furniture! Mixing wood tones helps to create a layered look. Although most of the wood in this room is pale, the dark oak here ties in with the walnut veneer of the mid-century coffee table. The painting here is another of my mum’s - it’s been very easy to find lovely artwork for this house! (NB. the radiator here was supposed to be painted the same colour as the walls but alas I was not there to supervise). And there it is! I hope you love it as much as I do. Please let me know in the comments. I’m an interior designer based in Halifax, West Yorkshire and I also offer a remote design service if you live further afield. Do get in touch if you’d like help with an interiors project.
